Wedium Launches as Europe's Ethical TikTok Alternative in 2026

A new social media platform called Wedium is entering the market as a European alternative to TikTok. Developed by Berlin-based advertising agency Glow, the platform began beta testing on March 25, 2026, with a full launch planned for July 2026. The founders claim it will prioritise user well-being with stricter controls and a less addictive design. Wedium GmbH was officially registered in Berlin on January 14, 2026, with a share capital of €25,000. The company was founded by Johannes Meissner, Nele Meissner, Andreas Hacker, Sebastian Wilke, and Lukas Backhaus. Unlike many social platforms, Wedium enforces mandatory identity verification for all users who want to post, comment, or like content.

To verify accounts, users must submit an official ID through the external provider WebID. Wedium does not store the ID data itself—only the verification status and technical reference details. Minors can only access the platform via verified parent accounts, and their content will be strictly age-appropriate.

The platform's design mimics TikTok's core functions but includes features to discourage excessive use. Its algorithm is built to avoid fostering addiction, and users are prompted to set time limits for watching videos. Funding will come from a hybrid model: ad revenue shared equally with content creators, plus an optional €8.99 monthly subscription for an ad-free experience. Wedium's beta phase is now underway, though public sources have not yet disclosed user numbers. The platform aims to stand out by combining stricter identity checks with a focus on responsible usage. If successful, it could offer a distinct alternative to existing social media giants when it fully launches in July 2026.
