Waterloo Park Now Features Temporarily Open Dog Park for Leased Canines
In a move to address the city's growing pet population, the Waterloo Park West Dog Park has been approved by the City Council and is now open for two years. This temporary park, located at the Westmount Road entrance of Waterloo Park, spans 1,670 square metres and will be open daily from dawn to dusk.
The park, designed for its open, grassy area and minimal construction needed, was intended to serve as a temporary solution while the city works towards creating a permanent leash-free dog park. City staff are currently searching for a permanent location, with factors such as land size and location, accessibility, safety and security, amenities, and infrastructure for waste disposal, shade, and lighting being considered.
The project for the temporary dog park cost $45,000 and follows a recommendation by the Parks, Forestry and Cemetery Services department. The decision was given earlier this summer.
The temporary dog park is just one part of the city's plans for pet-friendly spaces. Funding for a permanent leash-free dog park will be determined during the 2027 capital budget process. In the meantime, the city administration will take over the search for a permanent off-leash dog park location in Waterloo Park, with a decision expected by early 2024.
For dog owners and their furry friends, the temporary dog park offers a much-needed space to play and socialise. The fully fenced area ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Whether it's a quick game of fetch or a leisurely walk, the Waterloo Park West Dog Park is the perfect spot for dog lovers to unwind and connect with their pets.
