Was the video documenting the US assault on a Venezuela-based drug cartel artificially produced by AI technology?

In a recent development, the authenticity of a video released by the Venezuelan government has been questioned due to its analysis by the AI tool Gemini, created by Google.

The video, which shows the explosion of a boat at night, was shared by the US government, claiming it to be a drug-filled vessel belonging to the Aragua Train narcoterrorist group. However, the AI tool suggested that the video could be synthetic content made with generative AI.

Juan Ignacio Rouyet, an expert professor in AI and Ethics, has stated that as AI advances, we will only be able to trust what we see, not even what governments say, and this will only increase. This sentiment was echoed by Miguel Lucas, global innovation director of the firm Llorente y Cuenca and AI expert, who stated that generative AI like Gemini cannot be used as evidence due to its potential to offer erroneous data or make things up.

Sergio Álvarez-Teleña, executive director of SciTheWorld, explains that the video's low quality could be why Gemini might consider it false, as it may have been trained with higher quality videos. Lucas warns against using generalist technology like ChatGPT or Gemini for analyzing video authenticity, suggesting dedicated tools are more appropriate.

Despite the AI's uncertainty, no human expert consulted has detected any signs of falsity in the video. However, they warn that as AI advances, distinguishing reality from what is not will become increasingly difficult. The Minister of Communication of Venezuela, Freddy Ñáñez, has also stated on his Telegram channel that the video could be a fake made with AI.

The attack on the boat occurred at the latest hour of this Tuesday. The United States, under the leadership of Donald Trump, has been applying pressure on the Maduro regime. Venezuela has questioned the authenticity of the document, adding to the confusion surrounding the incident.

This incident underscores the challenges and uncertainties that lie ahead as AI continues to evolve and play a more significant role in our lives. It serves as a reminder that while technology offers numerous benefits, it also presents new complexities that need to be navigated carefully.
