Viktoria Roshchyna, a renowned Ukrainian journalist, passed away in 2023, leaving behind a legacy of critical and determined reporting. Her sudden demise caused shock and widespread sadness among her colleagues.

Roshchyna was a talented journalist who had been working for a little over six years. She made a significant impact in the industry, with her clients including Ukrayinska Pravda, Novosti Donbassa, Censor.net, Radio Free Europe, and Hromadske.

In 2022, Roshchyna received the International Women's Media Foundation's "Courage in Journalism Award" for her reporting on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This recognition highlighted her dedication to truth and her courage in the face of adversity.

Unfortunately, Roshchyna was not immune to the dangers that journalists face in Ukraine. She was held in a solitary cell from at least May to September of this year. The exact circumstances surrounding her death are still unclear, but an autopsy conducted in Kyiv, Ukraine, provided some answers.

Tetjana Kosak, editor-in-chief of the online portal Graty, described Roshchyna as "courageous" and "someone who stood firm in her convictions." These words echo the sentiments of many who knew and admired her.

In a moving gesture, the Ukrainian parliament submitted a request to posthumously award Roshchyna the title of "Heroine of Ukraine." This request was confirmed by the presidential office, a testament to the impact Roshchyna had on her country.

On August 2, 2025, Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Roshchyna the Order of Freedom posthumously, further honoring her contributions to journalism and her country.

As of now, a total of 29 Ukrainian media workers are currently in Russian captivity, according to Reporters Without Borders. Roshchyna's death serves as a grim reminder of the risks that journalists face in their pursuit of truth. However, her legacy continues to inspire, as she stands as a symbol of courage and determination in the face of adversity.
