Redesign of Ellernholzteich Loop to Boost Natural Climate Protection

The city of Bielefeld is set to undertake a comprehensive renovation of the 1.1 km long walking and cycling path around Ellernholzteich Lake, as part of a larger effort for natural climate protection in municipalities. The redesign, which is scheduled to start in 2026, includes new amenities such as benches, a barbecue area, shade-giving trees, and improved connections to surrounding residential areas.

The future school center students will also benefit from this redesign, as the project aims to ecologically improve the watercourse and increase its drainage capacity at Ellernholzteich. Two new culverts have been built at Ellernholzteich - one for the loop, another for the cycle path to the school grounds. In heavy rain, more water can now be directed to the rainwater retention basin at Ellernholzteich.

The construction work, which lasted approximately four and a half months, was carried out by the Greifswald company ASA Bau. The costs for the construction work amounted to approximately 450,000 euros, with funding provided by the KfW program "Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities".

The popular loop around Ellernholzteich Lake now allows continuous use for pedestrians and cyclists. The drainage ditch 25/1 at Ellernholzteich, previously partially culverted, has been redesigned in a nature-friendly way as part of the development of the future inclusive school center.

The specific design plans for the redesign have been commissioned, and the completion of these plans is scheduled by the end of 2025. Final planting is scheduled for fall at Ellernholzteich.

The redesign of the loop around Ellernholzteich Lake is a significant step towards enhancing the city's natural climate protection measures. The completed project is expected to provide a more enjoyable and sustainable environment for the community and the school students.
