VTubers Break New Ground with Game Awards 2025 Nominations
The Game Awards 2025 has nominated two virtual YouTubers, or VTubers, for its Content Creator of the Year category. Among them is Sakura Miko, a Japanese-speaking talent with over 2.4 million subscribers. She belongs to hololive, the world’s largest VTuber agency, which continues to expand its global reach.
Matoaki Tanigo, founder and CEO of hololive’s parent company COVER, reacted to Miko’s nomination with little surprise. As a key figure in shaping the VTuber industry, he has long advocated for broader recognition of digital creators. He now hopes voters will explore Miko’s streams to grasp her appeal, even if language differences pose a challenge.
Miko’s nomination marks another step for VTubers in gaining wider industry recognition. With COVER’s Twitch deal and Tanigo’s push for inclusion, digital creators are increasingly sharing the spotlight with traditional content makers. The outcome of this year’s awards could set a precedent for future nominations in the space.
