Vorpommern-Rügen sees fewer traffic accidents but speeding and wildlife crashes persist in 2025

Fewer crashes and deaths marked 2025 in Vorpommern-Rügen—yet reckless driving and animal collisions still dominated the roads. Could prevention efforts turn the tide?

Vorpommern-Rügen sees fewer traffic accidents but speeding and wildlife crashes persist in 2025

Traffic accidents in the Vorpommern-Rügen district fell slightly in 2025, with 8,194 incidents recorded. Despite this improvement, speeding and wildlife collisions remained major concerns. Authorities also noted a drop in fatalities compared to the previous year.

The district saw 734 accidents involving personal injury in 2025. Among these, 173 resulted in serious injuries, while 772 caused minor harm. Speeding was the second most common cause of injury-related crashes, accounting for 138 incidents. Failure to yield, however, led to the highest number of serious accidents, with 213 cases reported.

Wildlife collisions made up roughly one-third of all recorded accidents, topping the list as the most frequent cause. Meanwhile, nearly 42,000 speeding violations were logged during traffic checks throughout the year. Cyclists were involved in 311 accidents, leading to 58 serious injuries and 226 minor ones. No cyclists died in the Stralsund Police Inspectorate's area during this period. Nationwide, Germany recorded 2,814 traffic fatalities in 2025, according to preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office. This marked a 2% increase, or 44 more deaths, compared to 2024. Locally, though, the Vorpommern-Rügen district saw a significant drop in fatalities—from 20 in 2024 to just 7 in 2025. To improve road safety, the Stralsund Police Inspectorate took part in around 320 prevention events over the year. These efforts aimed to reduce risks for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.

The Vorpommern-Rügen district experienced fewer traffic accidents and deaths in 2025 than the previous year. Speeding and wildlife collisions stayed key issues, while prevention campaigns continued to promote safer roads. Nationally, however, traffic fatalities rose slightly, reversing a downward trend from earlier years.
