Volkswagen Challenges Court Verdict on Allegations of Slavery in Brazilian Workforce; Over $30 Million in Compensation Demanded

Volkswagen intends to challenge a court ruling over claims of enslaving workers in Brazil, with obligations to dish out over 30 million in reparations.

In a landmark ruling, the Labor Court in Pará, Brazil, has ordered Volkswagen's Brazilian subsidiary to pay a fine of $30.3 million for subjecting workers to conditions of slavery on the Vale do Rio Cristalino estate during the 1970s and 1980s. This is the largest fine of its kind in Brazil's history.

The court's decision states that Volkswagen Brasil actively participated in the strategic management of Companhia Vale Do Rio Cristalino, directly benefiting from the illicit exploitation of labor. Workers were closely monitored by armed guards, housed in precarious facilities, and lacked sufficient food or medical attention, especially those with malaria. The production model on the estate included practices of debt bondage, violence, and subjection to degrading conditions characteristic of modern slavery, according to the court.

Jose Pereira, a former worker, declared to German public broadcaster ARD in 2022 that employees incurred debts with those who hired them and that abuses were widespread. The ruling comes after Volkswagen Brasil acknowledged its responsibility for the forced labor conditions on the Pará farm before this was confirmed by higher courts.

Volkswagen Brasil has announced it will appeal the court ruling. The German automaker consistently upholds the principles of human dignity and strictly complies with all applicable labor laws and regulations. However, the current status of the appeal process remains unclear.

In a separate development, it was reported that tax revenue has increased with new tariffs on Shein and Temu. Our website is now accessible on WhatsApp for mobile users to stay informed about the most relevant news of the day, opinion articles, entertainment, trends, and more.

The fine and public apology are a significant step towards justice for the affected workers and a reminder of the importance of upholding human rights in all business practices.
