Volkswagen Faces Millions in Penalties for Slave Labor Practices in Brazil
In a historic ruling, the labor court in Redenção, Pará, has ordered Volkswagen do Brasil to pay a compensation of 165 million reais (approximately 26 million euros) for labor exploitation on Fazenda Vale do Rio Cristalino. This fine is the highest ever imposed in Brazil for modern slavery, according to the prosecutor's office.
Fazenda Vale do Rio Cristalino, an agricultural estate owned by a Volkswagen do Brasil subsidiary, has been at the heart of allegations of slave labor. Investigations into these claims began in 2019, initiated by Father Ricardo Rezende, the regional coordinator of the Land Pastoral Commission.
According to allegations, hundreds of temporary workers on Fazenda Vale do Rio Cristalino, also known as Fazenda Volkswagen, were subjected to long working days and degrading conditions. Investigators claim that armed guards and a debt bondage system were used to prevent workers from leaving the farm.
The company, which has a 72-year tradition and consistently upholds the principles of human dignity, has stated that it will continue its defense in higher courts. Volkswagen must also apologize to the victims, the court ordered.
This lawsuit against Volkswagen do Brasil is not the first of its kind. Out-of-court negotiations between the parties failed in 2023, leading to Volkswagen do Brasil being sued in December 2024. Volkswagen has been ordered to pay a million-dollar fine in Brazil for labor exploitation on an Amazon farm during the military dictatorship.
The Fazenda Vale do Rio Cristalino was established with support from the military dictatorship and tax incentives as part of a national strategy for the development and settlement of the Amazon region.
It is important to note that Volkswagen do Brasil has consistently upheld the principles of human dignity and strictly adhered to all applicable labor laws and regulations. However, the court's decision underscores the importance of vigilance and compliance in all business practices.
This case serves as a reminder of the need for companies to prioritise the rights and well-being of their workers, particularly in remote or vulnerable regions. As the case progresses through the courts, it is hoped that it will lead to lasting change and ensure that such practices are eradicated from Brazilian industries.
