In a recent development, a class-action lawsuit has been filed against Volkswagen in New Jersey, alleging violations of warranties and consumer protection laws in multiple states. The lawsuit, which involves the use of touch-sensitive steering-wheel buttons in 2021-2023 ID.4 models, has been brought forward by two plaintiffs, Ralph Melendez and Thomas W. Kiven, who are ID.4 model owners.

The lawsuit accuses Volkswagen of neglecting to offer repairs or reimbursements for the faulty steering wheel touch panels. Plaintiffs claim that these controls are overly responsive and can unintentionally activate adaptive cruise control, leading to incidents of sudden acceleration and unintended emergency braking failures. One plaintiff reported an incident where her ID.4 suddenly accelerated, causing more than $14,000 worth of damage to the vehicle's undercarriage and a bruised hand.

Other drivers have also reported similar incidents, adding to the concerns surrounding the touch controls. Complaints regarding the faulty steering wheel touch panels have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Volkswagen had previously committed to phasing out these touch controls, with the shift to physical buttons set to begin with the all-electric ID.2all. However, the lawsuit does not mention any plans from Volkswagen to address the issue for current ID.4 model owners.

The plaintiffs argue that the shift to physical buttons does nothing for current ID.4 model owners, leaving them exposed to unpredictable and hazardous control activation. The lawsuit argues that Volkswagen has violated various legal protections, including warranty breaches and state-level consumer laws in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

The lawsuit is a proposed class-action, meaning it could potentially affect a large number of ID.4 model owners. The lawsuit is still ongoing and pertains specifically to the ID.4 models from 2021-2023.

Volkswagen is also accused of failing to inform customers about the defect in the touch controls on the steering wheel, adding to the concerns of the plaintiffs and other affected ID.4 owners. The company has yet to issue a formal response to the lawsuit.

As the situation develops, it is essential for ID.4 model owners to stay informed and vigilant regarding any updates or potential solutions to the faulty steering wheel touch controls.
