Viral Reddit hoax exposes how AI-fueled misinformation fooled thousands
A viral Reddit post claiming that delivery apps exploit drivers through hidden algorithms has been exposed as a hoax. The fake documents and employee badge used in the post were likely created using generative AI. Before its removal, the post gathered over 87,000 upvotes and spread widely across social media.
The post, shared by an anonymous Reddit user, included an 18-page document supposedly containing internal Uber records. It alleged that companies like Uber Eats and DoorDash used a 'Desperation Score' to track drivers' willingness to accept low-paying orders. The document also claimed that apps adjusted base pay based on predicted customer tips.
Major delivery platforms quickly denied the accusations, calling them false and condemning the alleged practices. Meanwhile, many online commenters took the claims at face value, with some demanding legal action against the companies.
Investigations later revealed that both the documents and the user's employee badge were fabricated. The badge contained a SynthID watermark, indicating it had been generated or edited using Google AI. Journalists also found that the user's Signal and email accounts had been deleted, with no response to follow-up requests.
After remaining online for several days, Reddit moderators eventually removed the post. The search results linked in the original thread had no connection to delivery apps or lawsuits but instead referenced German left-wing politics.
The fake post gained millions of impressions before being debunked. Delivery companies have reiterated that the claims were baseless. The incident highlights how quickly misinformation can spread, even when major platforms deny the allegations.
