"Violent incident: Afghan national takes life of fellow refugee in a shelter"
In the quiet town of Güstrow, a shocking incident occurred at a communal accommodation on Glasewitzer Chaussee, the largest such facility in the city, housing over 200 residents.
On Tuesday, a 23-year-old Afghan man, identified as Markus L., allegedly attacked two of his countrymen with a knife on the second floor of the building. Witnesses in the building described dramatic scenes during the attack, with one resident even referring to it as a "bloodbath."
The attack left one victim, a 25-year-old, dead, and another suffering life-threatening injuries. The injured victim was rushed to the hospital.
Neighbours have criticised the location of the accommodation, believing it fosters isolation for residents. Some residents, whose nationalities were not specified, have expressed a desire to go into town more often, although the specific reasons for this were not provided.
The communal accommodation, located on the outskirts of the city, does not seem to have caused much notice in the daily life of nearby residents so far. However, the incident has raised concerns about the safety and integration of the residents.
It is reported that the perpetrator had consumed alcohol before the incident. The suspected perpetrator, Markus L., was arrested by the Special Operations Command (SEK) Baden-Württemberg on March 22, 2023, after shooting at the SEK in Reutlingen and wounding an officer’s forearm before surrendering.
Residents of the accommodation, who are mainly Afghans and Syrians, have expressed their condolences for the victim's family and hope for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing investigation. The community is now left to grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event, seeking answers and healing.
