Fifty wine cellars flooded - Villagers in Baden-Württemberg endure deluge-induced flooding.

A small village in Baden-Württemberg experienced a torrential downpour last Monday evening, leaving some of its residents wading through flooded streets. The village of Gemmingen (population 5,500) was hit by an intense thunderstorm that included large hailstones and unprecedented amounts of rainfall.

A police spokesperson reported that the streets were turned into muddy rivers, with fields releasing their sediment onto the roadways. Due to the enormous amount of water, the main thoroughfare of the village had to be shut down by authorities. The fire department was out in full force, trying to control the situation in various areas.

The reason for the flooding was the prolonged presence of a thunderstorm cell above the town, which dumped as much as 50 liters of rain per square meter. The two streams running through Gemmingen soon became rampaging rivers, engulfing the entire village in water.
