Vienna’s subway gets €6.2M upgrade for accessibility and energy efficiency by 2026
Wiener Linien will upgrade 15 elevators and 13 escalators across Vienna’s subway system in 2026. The €6.2 million project aims to improve accessibility, safety, and energy efficiency. Many of the elevators being renewed are over two decades old and no longer meet modern accessibility standards.
The upgrades will focus heavily on the U6 line, where several elevators have been in use since the early 2000s. Each renovation is expected to take around eight weeks. During this time, affected stations will stay accessible through nearby stops with island platforms.
New escalators will be installed at major hubs like Karlsplatz, Stephansplatz, Handelskai, and Floridsdorf. These models will use less energy and include better lighting for improved visibility. Tscherttegasse station will also receive an extra elevator to enhance accessibility for passengers. In addition to hardware improvements, Wiener Linien is introducing the Liftboy app. This tool will allow users to extend elevator door opening times, making travel easier for wheelchair users, parents with strollers, and people using mobility aids.
The €6.2 million investment will bring older infrastructure up to current accessibility standards. Passengers can expect smoother, safer, and more energy-efficient journeys once the upgrades are complete. The project is scheduled to finish by the end of 2026.
