Judas Priest's Rob Halford Contemplates Tony Bennett Cover Album

In a recent interview with UCR, metal legend Rob Halford shared some unexpected musical aspirations. The singer, who is renowned for his powerful vocals in Judas Priest, has expressed interest in recording an album of cover versions from the late jazz and pop crooner, Tony Bennett.

Halford, who is 73 years old, has always been a fan of Bennett's work. He expressed his sadness when Bennett passed away in 2023 at the age of 96, but the icon's music continues to inspire him.

"Tony Bennett was a beacon, an icon," Halford said. "His music transcends genres, and it's a testament to his talent. I've always admired his ability to connect with audiences, and I'd love to pay tribute to him in my own way."

Halford isn't the only musician intrigued by Bennett's music. Mark Tremonti, guitarist for Creed and Alter Bridge, has had success with covers of Frank Sinatra's work.

The singer believes the world is more open to such a move now. "The current time is a beautiful period," Halford said. "There's acceptance of music and the joy of music without barriers. I think people would appreciate a fresh take on Tony's classics."

However, Halford is unsure about the logistics of such a project. "I'm still exploring the idea," he said. "But I believe I've earned the right to make any kind of album I feel like making, even if it would be a huge shift from what fans are used to hearing from me."

Despite this potential departure from heavy metal, Halford's love for all kinds of singers remains. He enjoys the jazz side of Lady Gaga's performances in Vegas, and finds the ideas and imagination of singers like her attractive.

While there are no plans yet for a 2023 jazz/pop crooner death that Halford reveres or plans to cover their songs, fans can look forward to seeing what this metal legend does next.
