Radisson Collection Hotel to Feature Stunning Vertical Garden Following Aquarium Explosion

The Radisson Collection Hotel near Alexanderplatz, which made international headlines in December 2022 due to an explosion of its 16-meter-high indoor aquarium, is set to unveil a new centrepiece in its renovated lobby. Union Investment Real Estate GmbH, the property owner, has announced plans for a 16-meter-high vertical garden.

The investigation into the cause of the aquarium explosion was closed in October 2023 due to a lack of a clear conclusion. The hotel has been closed since the incident, resulting in the flooding of the hotel lobby and the street outside with approximately 1 million liters of water and 1,500 fish.

However, Union Investment is making the most of the situation by designing the new vertical garden to make use of as much of the aquarium's remaining material as possible. The 150-ton-concrete base of the aquarium will be reused in the installation of the vertical garden. The 90 tons of acrylic glass from the exploded tank is planned to be recycled by a certified waste disposal company this summer.

The new vertical garden will be arranged on 36 tree-like vertical slats, covering around 120 square meters and reaching up to the sixth floor. It will feature approximately 2,000 plants of 22 different species. The garden will also have dramatic lighting that changes over the course of the day, adding to its visual appeal.

Union Investment has declined to make the cost of the lobby rebuild public. The exact date for the reopening of the hotel is not specified, but it is expected to be at the end of 2023. It is worth noting that the vertical garden will not contain fish, unlike the previous aquarium.
