Vehicular Owners Disregard Indicator Signals Issued by CarMD, Reveals Alert

In a recent report, CarMD.com Corporation, an independent company, has released the findings of their annual CarMD Vehicle Health Index for 2024. This comprehensive industry report provides consumers and the automotive aftermarket with valuable insights into check engine light repair trends.

According to the data, repair costs for check engine light-related issues are on the rise across the U.S., with an overall increase of 5.1% in 2023, averaging $424. This increase is mainly due to a surge in parts costs, which saw an over 7% rise last year.

One of the key findings in the report is the average cost to replace ignition coil(s) and spark plug(s), which stands at $398. Interestingly, the cost to replace ignition coil(s) alone averages $212, while the cost to replace fuel injector(s) is $446, and the mass air flow sensor, $311. A new addition to the list this year is the cost to replace the ABS wheel speed sensor, which averages $271.

The report also reveals that the gas cap is no longer one of the top five most common check engine repairs, marking the first time it has dropped out of the top five since 2011. Tightening a fuel cap remains free, while replacing it costs an average of $25.

The study focuses on car repair trends related to the check engine light, and it's worth noting that more U.S. vehicle owners are reporting dashboard warning lights on. The data shows that 20% have a check engine light on, 12% an oil/maintenance light, 11% an ABS light, and 7% an SRS air bag light.

For instance, the cost to reprogram the powertrain control module averages $109, and the cost to replace oxygen sensor(s) averages $253. The cost to replace a catalytic converter(s) is significantly higher at $1,304.
