Utah triumphs over UCLA with Devon Dampier scoring 3 touchdowns
In a thrilling display of football, the Utah Utes overpowered the UCLA Bruins in their season opener, securing a commanding victory with a final score of 43-10.
The Utes' offensive prowess was on full display from the outset, scoring on their first three drives. Wayshawn Parker, a defensive stalwart who surprised many by capping the opening drive with a 13-yard touchdown run, set the tone for the Utes.
Quarterback Nico Iamaleava, a transfer from Tennessee, showed his prowess, completing 11 of 22 passes for 136 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. His connection with star linebacker Lander Barton, who scored a touchdown on a 14-yard pass, was particularly noteworthy.
Lander Barton, a top draft-eligible prospect for the 2026 NFL Draft, shone brightly, leading in tackles last season and scoring a touchdown in the season opener. Standing at 6'5", Barton played the Sam Backer position with exceptional skill.
Utah's defence was equally impressive, with defensive end Logan Fano snuffing out UCLA's second drive with a tackle for loss and a sack on consecutive plays. Isaiah Chisom also contributed, taking down Devon Dampier, the junior transfer from New Mexico, for a loss, forcing Utah to punt.
Despite UCLA's best efforts, they struggled to convert on third downs, managing only 2-for-11 throughout the game. In contrast, Utah converted an impressive 14-for-16 on third downs, demonstrating their efficiency and dominance.
Mateen Bhaghani's 46-yard field goal for UCLA briefly reduced the deficit to 23-10, but Utah responded swiftly. Curtis kicked a 54-yard field goal at halftime to extend their lead to 23-7, and Dampier scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run on fourth-and-goal in the third quarter to further widen the gap.
NaQuari Rogers and Dallen Bentley also added touchdowns for Utah, with Rogers scoring on a 1-yard run and Bentley on a 2-yard pass from Dampier. Anthony Woods scored Utah's first touchdown of the second half on a 19-yard pass from Iamaleava, making the score 36-10.
Smith Snowden, who also starts at cornerback for the Utes, added to Utah's tally with an 8-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
UCLA failed to capitalise on the opportunity after Utah's punt, and the game ended with Utah celebrating a resounding victory. The Utes' impressive performance bodes well for their upcoming season, with their next game scheduled against San Diego State.
