US and South Korea reach agreement for release of Korean workers held in detention following Hyundai factory raid

South Korea and the United States have made significant strides in their trade relations, with the announcement of a $350 billion (RM1.4 trillion) fund to aid Korean companies in entering the US market. This development comes as US President Donald Trump is expected to visit South Korea in October for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) event, according to three Trump administration officials.

In a separate matter, a raid carried out by US federal agents at a Hyundai Motor manufacturing facility in Georgia led to the detention of a large number of Korean workers. The majority of those hundreds detained were Korean nationals, and they are currently being held in Georgia. The South Korean government has been actively engaged in talks with the US to secure the release of these workers.

The location of these talks was in South Korea, with the announcement being made by Kang Hun-sik, Presidential Chief of Staff, in televised remarks. However, no further details about the nature of the investigation or the charges against the Korean workers were provided in the report.

In response to this incident, the South Korean government plans to seek ways to improve the visa system of Korean workers traveling to the US to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future. This move is part of a broader effort to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

As for the detained Korean workers, a plane has been arranged to transport them back to South Korea once administrative procedures are completed. The exact timeline for their return remains uncertain, but the South Korean government is working diligently to ensure a swift resolution to this matter.

These developments underscore the complex and multifaceted nature of the relationship between South Korea and the United States. As the two countries move forward, it is hoped that they will continue to work together to address challenges and seize opportunities for mutual benefit.
