A Hero in the Frozen Land: Dr. Radomir Ivanovich Alexandrov, Yakutia's First Neonatologist

In the vast and frigid expanse of Yakutia, a beacon of hope shines brightly in the form of Dr. Radomir Ivanovich Alexandrov. Born in the village of Namtsy, this humble hero has dedicated his life to saving the tiniest lives in one of the world's most challenging environments.

After graduating from the Tomsk Medical Institute in 1978, Alexandrov was sent to work in the Amginsky District, where he became the only pediatric specialist. His journey in neonatology began under the guidance of Professor, Academician N.P. Shabalon in Leningrad.

In 1990, Alexandrov, along with obstetrician-gynecologist A.A. Egorova, became the representative of the Ministry of Health for the construction of the Mother and Child Center. Over the next five years, he personally oversaw the construction of this magnificent facility, which upon its opening in 1997, became one of the best and largest pediatric centers in Russia.

The center acquired modern imported equipment, including transport incubators for critically ill infants. With these resources, Alexandrov was able to transport critically ill newborns from any remote region of Yakutia within the first 24 hours after birth, a feat that significantly improved survival rates.

In the early 2000s, Alexandrov brought alive from Chersky the smallest baby in the history of the center - a 500-gram critically ill newborn. He also managed to help a boy diagnosed with the most complex congenital heart disease - Tetralogy of Fallot - undergo a unique operation in an American clinic in the 1990s.

Alexandrov's efforts led to a dramatic reduction in the infant mortality rate. When he took over the newborn department in a five-story maternity hospital in Yakutsk, the rate was around 19 per thousand. In just 5-6 years, he managed to bring it down to 5 per thousand.

Today, over 100 neonatologists work in Yakutia, with two perinatal centers having neonatal intensive care units. Dr. Alexandrov, rightfully considered the first neonatologist of Yakutia, continues to fly out on air ambulance calls, saving, treating, and caring for premature babies for over 20 years.

While the exact number of critically ill, premature newborns that Alexandrov has saved during his career in Yakutia remains undisclosed, there is no denying the profound impact he has had on the lives of countless infants and their families.
