Urgent Call from Deputy Prime Minister Regarding Typhoon Nongfa Response Needed Immediately
Typhoon Nongfa Approaches Central Vietnam: Authorities Take Action
Typhoon Nongfa, moving towards the seas and coastal areas of central Vietnam at 20-25kph, is expected to make landfall this evening, August 30, in Ha Tinh to northern Quang Tri. The storm comes as the country enters a weekend and is preparing for the National Day celebrations on September 2.
In response to the approaching typhoon, the Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has issued Official Dispatch No 153, outlining measures to ensure the safety and preparedness of the affected regions.
The Minister of Agriculture and Environment has been instructed to closely monitor the storm and provide timely updates on rainfall and flooding. Similarly, the Minister of Industry and Trade must oversee the safety of hydropower reservoirs. EVN, the national power utility, has been asked to implement safety measures for hydropower plants, transmission systems, and power infrastructure to ensure quick recovery after the storm and maintain electricity supply.
Chairpersons of the People's Committees in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien-Hue have been instructed to closely monitor the situation. Local authorities must guide boats to avoid affected areas and prepare for evacuation in unsafe zones. Authorities must also account for vessels at sea and ensure residents do not remain on boats, floating cages, or aquaculture platforms during the storm.
VNPT and Viettel, the major telecommunications providers in Vietnam, have been asked to deploy solutions to keep communications uninterrupted from the central to local levels, especially to villages and residential clusters at high risk of isolation due to the disaster.
The Ministry of National Defence and Ministry of Public Security have been tasked with preparing contingency plans, deploying forces and equipment for assistance, and remaining ready for emergency rescue and relief operations.
The storm is predicted to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to localities from Thanh Hoa to Hue. There is a high risk of flash floods, landslides in mountainous areas, and flooding in low-lying regions, riverbanks, and urban zones. Chairpersons have been instructed to continuously update storm and flood information to proactively direct response measures.
Typhoon Nongfa made landfall at 3:00 p.m. on August 30, 2025, in Ha Tinh on the coast of Vietnam and weakened into a tropical depression by 7:00 p.m. the same day. Local authorities are urged to remain vigilant and follow the instructions provided to ensure the safety and well-being of their communities during this challenging time.
