Urban development project emerges at Billebecken in Hamburg

The Bille Basin, a historically industrial area in Hamburg-Middle, is set for a transformation into a modern quarter for production, research, and commerce. The first construction project in this redesigned area, plot BB16, is being led by the Hamburg-Middle district office and the Billebogen Development Company.

Located on Bullenhuser Damm, plot BB16 spans approximately 18,000 square meters and is scheduled to be ready for construction by mid-2026. The urban planning concept for this plot, developed by Lorenzen Mayer Architects, Loidl Atelier, and Argus City and Traffic, includes the resumption of the historical block edge structure and the stacking of areas vertically.

The area will be divided into two parts, each accommodating flexible spaces for labs, urban production, logistics, or data centers. Halls, labs, and offices will be arranged on top of each other to create space for open areas on the water. Two buildings with a height of up to 25 meters will be flanked by two lower building bodies.

The former school on Bullenhuser Damm, with its NS memorial site, remains a central part of the neighbourhood and will be carefully incorporated into new construction as a place of remembrance and learning.

The Billebogen district, located on the banks of the Bille Basin and surrounded by water bodies, will supplement existing structures in Hamburg-Middle by offering new spaces for innovative companies, start-ups, and research institutions. A nearly one-kilometer-long promenade on the south bank of the basin will be created, offering space for relaxation and meeting.

The area is well-connected by public transportation. The S-Bahn station Rothenburgsort (S2 and S21) and the nearby Elbe bridges (A255) ensure easy accessibility.

The construction field BB16 marks the beginning of a new chapter in the traditional Bille Basin. As the first construction project in the redesigned area, it signifies the start of a modern and innovative future for this historical location. The creation of a kilometer-long promenade, along with the adaptable uses planned for the plot, promises to make the Bille Basin an attractive destination for both businesses and residents alike.
