Ural Folklore Comes Alive in Bukanushka's Journeys for Young Audiences

A new musical performance, Bukanushka's Journeys, has premiered in the Sverdlovsk region, blending Ural folk culture with modern storytelling. Aimed at children and parents, the production introduces audiences to the domovoi Bukanushka, a mischievous yet wise character from local folklore. The project, supported by a grant from Russia's Ministry of Culture, builds on the long-running Сказки с оркестром series by the Children's Philharmonic.

The story follows Bukanushka, a fairytale old man who guides children in understanding family values. Played by Gleb Kopysov, the character helps young viewers distinguish between harmonious and troubled households. The same actors portray both the parents and the cunning Fox and Wolf, illustrating contrasting family dynamics.

Composer Margarita Kesareva's cycle, *The Wanderings of Bukanushka*, serves as the foundation for the performance. Her music, combined with Ural folk motifs, brings the tale to life. Set designer Oxana Bakerkina and visual artist Andrei Kazantsev merged traditional elements with contemporary styles in the costumes and scenery. After its debut, the production embarked on a regional tour, visiting Middle Uralsk, Asbest, Refтинisk, Syssert, Nizhnii Tagil, Nyevyanisk, Baranchinskii, and Kushva. Earlier, the VIII Symphonic Forum of Russia had also taken place in the Sverdlovsk Oblast, with stops in Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Tagil, and Kamensk-Uralsky. The Children's Philharmonic describes *Bukanushka's Journeys* as the first step in a broader project. The performance continues the *Сказки с оркестром* series, which originally adapted literary tales but now highlights works by Ural composers.

The tour has reached multiple cities across the region, bringing Ural folklore and music to new audiences. With its mix of storytelling, orchestral performance, and educational themes, the project aims to foster appreciation for local culture. Further developments in Bukankusha's Journeys are expected in the future.
