Upstairs dwellers in Graz unexpectedly lacking the "Hüttengaudi" event, previously known for its queer ambiance.
The picturesque city of Graz will once again play host to the annual Aufsteirern festival, a celebration of Styrian culture, for the 24th time this September. Over the second weekend, an expected 175,000 visitors will flock to the city to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Steirische traditions.
The heart of the festival will be the craftsmanship mile, where various exhibitors, including the RosaLila Panthers, will showcase their offerings. The RosaLila Panthers, a long-standing part of Styrian society since 1991, had planned to have a booth at the event, symbolising that Styrian tradition is for and by all people in the region.
However, the Styrian provincial government made the decision to cancel the "hut party" of the RosaLila Panthers at the Graz "Aufsteirern" in September 2023. Despite this setback, the association remains steadfast in their belief that queer people should be an integral part of Styrian folk culture.
The festival will span across 17 Graz squares, streets, and courtyards, with around 900 musicians, 350 dancers, and 200 exhibitors bringing the culture to life. The Steingarten courtyard will host a beer garden and live music, providing a lively atmosphere for festival-goers.
In a bid to show that Styrian culture is colorful, diverse, and open, the Steingarten courtyard will also feature wild culinary delights from the Styrian hunting community, as well as a selfie stand.
For the first time, the entire "Aufsteirern" area will be a "SafeNow" zone, ensuring the safety and well-being of all attendees. Steirische specialties will be on offer in the Landhausgasse, offering visitors a taste of the local cuisine.
The Aufsteirern festival embodies the spirit of participation, diversity, and community, with folk culture living and thriving through these values. Despite the cancellation of their booth, the RosaLila Panthers remain a vital part of this narrative, advocating for inclusivity and diversity in Styrian culture.
