Upcoming thermally resilient heating solutions

Detmold, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, has taken a significant step towards reducing its carbon footprint with the development of a municipal heat planning. This initiative, supported financially by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection, aims to provide citizens with an orientation on climate-friendly and reliable heat supply options.

The heat planning, a collaborative effort with the city society, is designed to help citizens evaluate their personal heating options, aligning with the city's ambitious climate goals. The results report of this municipal heat planning for Detmold is now available online.

Heating buildings accounts for 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in Detmold, making it a crucial area to address in the city's efforts to become climate neutral by 2035, a goal the city's portal aims to achieve.

To help citizens better understand the heat planning, an information event titled "Which heat for my house?" will take place on 02.09.2025 in the large festival hall of the Detmolder Stadthalle from 6 pm to 8 pm. This event will be held in cooperation with NRW.Energy4Climate.

The heat planning will be continuously refined and updated by 2030 at the latest. Information about the heat planning, including tips, map views, and background information, can be found on the city's climate portal: klima.our website/klimaschutz/waermeplan.

For questions about the heat planning, contact the city portal at kwp@our website. Interested parties who own a building in certain test areas can also contact Stadtwerke Detmold.

In priority district heating expansion areas such as the city center, Hiddesen-Mitte, parts of Spork-Eichholz, and Jerxen-Orbke, a possible district heating expansion appears sensible in the long term if technical and economic prerequisites are met. In other areas, a switch to emission-free heating is recommended at the next opportunity.

The funding program for the development of the heating plan for Detmold was provided by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), and the support will end at the end of 2024. The municipal heat planning was presented to the committee for urban development and the city council.

Detmold's city portal has issued a press release regarding the municipal heat planning, highlighting the city's commitment to tackling climate change and creating a sustainable future for its citizens.
