Upcoming Summer Games in Neuwied, 2024
In the picturesque town of Neuwied, on September 7, 2024, the Summer Games took place, marking a significant milestone in the 20th anniversary celebration of a sports organisation for people with intellectual disabilities. The event, organised by Special Olympics Rhineland-Palatinate, the city of Neuwied, and its Inclusion Working Group, was a festival of sports and encounters, promoting inclusive diversity.
State Secretary Simone Schneider emphasised the importance of inclusion in sports and all areas of life. She was joined by Melanie Brumm, Managing Director of Special Olympics Rhineland-Palatinate, who highlighted the goal of inclusive interaction and fun in sports.
The day was filled with various sports activities, with around 60 athletes with and without intellectual disabilities participating in swimming competitions at the Deichwelle. ID judokas held their competitions at the Rhein-Wied High School gymnasium.
One of the standout moments of the day was the victory of Patrick Kucera from Nassau, who won the gold medal in judo after many years of not participating in a competition. Special Olympics athlete Christoph Trübenbach, who travelled from the Palatinate to Neuwied, also took part in the sports activities throughout the day.
The "Market of Possibilities" offered by the Inclusion Working Group showcased institutions and activities for people with disabilities, while the sports events were framed by inclusive opening and closing ceremonies at the Homestead. Regional acts and verbal ping-pong from Fabian Illigens and Kevin Pesch added to the festive atmosphere.
Neuwied's Mayor, Peter Jung, highlighted the city's improving attitude towards inclusion: "Neuwied has a long tradition regarding institutions for people with disabilities, and today's Summer Games have shown that coexistence works very well." The Neuwied clubs, facilities, and institutions demonstrated their openness to the topic of inclusion and significantly contributed to the success of the Summer Games.
The volunteer coordinators of Special Olympics Rhineland-Palatinate played a significant role in the success of the Summer Games. The intention of the event was to provide opportunities for trying out sports, meeting people, and having fun, while encouraging inclusive interaction between people with and without disabilities.
The Summer Games aimed to be more than just a sports event; it was a celebration of inclusivity, diversity, and the power of sports to bring people together.
