Unveiling the Hidden Role of Satellites in the PartyPoker Tour Success
Partying Up at the PartyPoker Tour: A Sociable, Players-First Gaming Experience
Quite recently, I had the pleasure of joining the PartyPoker Tour in London. The UK live poker scene needed a shake-up, and I believe this tour is just the thing to stir things up!
The PartyPoker Tour is all about having a good time in fantastic locations with terrific staff. But what truly sets it apart is its satellite structure, which has already driven impressive numbers in London. Here's what makes it such a winner for players.

Multiple Opportunities beyond the Main Event
One advantage of PartyPoker is that you can also qualify for the side events. For low-stakes players, this is a welcomed touch since it eliminates the frustration of qualifying for a live event, only to bust and miss out on the other tournaments. You can even snag seat-only tickets for the £150 side events.
Another appealing feature is the flexibility of the packages. You'll receive a £500 main event ticket and £500 in expenses, which you can use as you see fit. Should something come up and you can't make it to Manchester, you can use your ticket for Glasgow. Win two packages? Go wild in Manchester with not one, but two shots (or even three with the extra travel expenses)! Some operators have strict rules about using packages, but not PartyPoker.
The satellites move at a swift pace, particularly the final stage. Let's not beat around the bush: a satellite is a means to an end for poker enthusiasts, and nobody wants to be stuck in one all night like you might in a traditional tournament.
Perhaps the best aspect of the satellites is that you must qualify for the final stage; you can't just buy your way in. The satellite tree goes £0.20->£1->£5-£25-Final. If you're looking for a shortcut, buy in for the £25 phase and qualify for the final on Sundays.
At first glance, this might seem restrictive, but satellites have long struggled with satellite experts snatching up all the seats. PartyPoker's system discourages these players from participating, ensuring a greater number of players who would otherwise be unable to attend these events can qualify.
Strategizing for Success
The PartyPoker Tour satellites offer two key strategies that differ from traditional ones. First off, the early rounds are Phase MTTs, and second, the final phase is no direct buy-in.
In a Phase MTT, you carry your chips from one phase to the next, rather than starting fresh with a 'starting stack', as you do in regular satellites. For this reason, Rounds Two to Four in the PartyPoker Tour satellites feel more like a tournament, where you should aim to accumulate chips, rather than just survive.
Most players don't realize this, but they will likely play too tight at the end of each Round, offering opportunities to exploit them by being more aggressive than usual.
The final phase will differ from regular satellite direct buy-in tournaments. It will likely be softer than the equivalent satellites for live events on other sites because satellite grinders can't directly buy-in. There will also be some 'no shows' from the previous Round, making the pool even softer. Additionally, players will open up their ranges to steal their dead stacks.
Once you reach the bubble, things become more like traditional satellites, although they will still be softer at the buy-in level.
I've taken part in PartyPoker for years because their satellite structure strikes the perfect balance between flexibility and deterring hoarding. It also wraps up quickly and is relatively soft. The PartyPoker Tour satellites maintain this trend and are a big reason why I think this tour will succeed.
