Unknown individuals are placing elevators on the Kransand beach in an act of vandalism.
The Kransand leisure area in Mainz-Kastel, a popular destination for skating, bouldering, and strength training, has suffered damage due to vandalism. The city administration has announced plans to implement regular maintenance schedules, enhance surveillance, and improve structural reinforcements to prevent future incidents.
The damage includes the demolition of automatic doors, sensors, and technology that have been rendered inoperable. The repair is expected to take twelve weeks, with costs estimated in the five-figure range.
The Kransand leisure area, which was officially opened in freezing temperatures last year by Wiesbaden's Economic Development Minister Christiane Hinninger, is a significant relief for people with strollers, wheelchairs, or heavy bags. It connects the popular Rhine promenade with the Mainz-Kastel Bridgehead, making it a vital link for many passengers at the Mainz-Kastel Bridgehead bus stop.
The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of the Kransand elevator, which was celebrated as a symbol of barrier-free access and urban quality of life. This is not the first incident of vandalism against the Kransand elevator, as repairs were already needed in June, costing around 6,000 euros.
The city administration is now examining measures to prevent such damage in the future. Options under consideration include monitoring, increased patrols, or structural changes.
Meanwhile, urban planners are presenting the first results of their work for Kastel's West on May 11, following a joint bicycle tour and many suggestions. A House of Education in Mainz-Kastel invites discussion about Kastel's West, providing a platform for the community to voice their opinions and ideas.
Despite the current downtime, the Kransand leisure area is expected to attract Wiesbaden's skate scene once it reopens. The public inauguration of the Kransand leisure area is scheduled for December 14. A photo gallery of the opening ceremony is available for those interested.
For those using detours during the repair period, patience is required. However, discussions about security and the importance of maintaining such facilities for the community are likely to continue.
