University City of Marburg's Flagging Occurred in September 2025
In the heart of Germany, the University City of Marburg is gearing up for a series of significant events in September.
Since 1999, the USA has been celebrating World Bisexuality Day, or "Celebrate Bisexuality Day", on September 23rd. This day aims to raise awareness that bisexuality is an independent sexual orientation alongside heterosexuality and homosexuality. Marburg will join the celebration, with the town hall flagged in observance from 7 am until dusk.
On the same day, all public buildings in Marburg will be flagged in memory of the victims of flight, expulsion, and deportation. This memorial day remembers the suffering of those affected and calls for responsibility and reconciliation.
The following day, on September 20th, the Marburg town hall will be flagged in observance of World Children's Day. This year's theme is "Children's Rights - Building Blocks for Democracy!". UNICEF Germany and the German Children's Aid Organization are organising a nationwide participatory action for World Children's Day, where children and young people can submit their demands and ideas on children's rights.
The University City of Marburg will also fly the city flag at the town hall on September 1st, to commemorate World Peace Day, also known as "Anti-War Day". This day originated from the November Revolution of 1918/19, when pacifist peace organizations called for mass demonstrations to remember the horrors of World War I. The flagging at the town hall for World Peace Day will take place from 7 am until dusk.
In addition, September 21st marks Homecoming Day, first celebrated on August 6, 1950, in Stuttgart. The flagging of public buildings on Homecoming Day in Marburg is in observance of this tradition.
It's worth noting that there is no scheduled event for Marburg to be "raised" on September 22, 2025.
Lastly, an action is being planned to recreate a monument for democracy in Berlin using these ideas. The details of this project are yet to be announced.
These events in Marburg serve as a reminder of the importance of diversity, peace, and remembrance, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and reflect on these crucial aspects of our society.
