United States rescinds visas for Palestinian authorities before UN General Assembly meeting
The United States has taken a significant step in its foreign policy towards the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA). Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on August 29, 2025, that he is revoking and denying visas for members of these organisations ahead of the upcoming UN General Assembly.
This decision comes as part of a series of steps the Trump administration has taken to impose visa restrictions on Palestinians. The State Department has also suspended a program that allowed injured Palestinian children from Gaza to come to the US for medical treatment.
The revocation of visas comes before the annual high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly. Mr. Rubio has also ordered some new visa applications from Palestinian officials to be denied. The number of visas revoked or applications denied was not specified by the State Department.
The PA and PLO are required by U.S. law to consistently repudiate terrorism and end incitement to terrorism in education. The PA must also end its attempts to bypass negotiations through international lawfare campaigns. The Trump Administration considers the PLO and PA as not complying with their commitments and undermining the prospects for peace.
However, the PA Mission to the UN will receive waivers per the UN Headquarters Agreement. The decision is made by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in accordance with U.S. law.
The move follows a suspension of the program and comes as Israeli military declared Gaza's largest city a combat zone. The United States remains open to re-engagement that is consistent with their laws, should the PA/PLO meet their obligations and demonstrably take concrete steps to return to a constructive path of compromise and peaceful coexistence with the State of Israel.
