Papua New Guinea in Focus: News from the Pacific Island Nation - United Nations worries about 670 fatalities due to landslide accident.

Serhan Aktoprak from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated on Sunday, "Estimates currently suggest that over 150 homes have been engulfed, and it's likely that over 670 lives have been lost." This tragic event transpired early on Friday in a secluded part of the Pacific island nation.

Rescue efforts in the Enga province of Papua New Guinea's highlands are proving challenging. Aktoprak shared, "The situation is horrifying. The land is still shifting and water is continuing to flow, presenting a significant threat to all participating in the rescue operations." People used makeshift tools like sticks, shovels, and large scoops to unearth the deceased bodies.

Papua New Guinea is situated in the southwestern Pacific and is known for experiencing some harsh weather conditions. Through this year, the country has already experienced a series of heavy rain and floods. In March, a landslide claimed the lives of at least 23 people in a different province.
