Union Budget 2026-27 unleashes record funding for Northeast India's transformation

The Union Budget 2026-27 has placed unprecedented focus on India's Northeast, with record allocations for infrastructure, rehabilitation, and regional development. Assam, in particular, stands to benefit from a sharp rise in funding, marking a shift towards targeted growth and cooperative federalism.

The Northeast saw its total budgetary allocation jump by 22 percent, rising from Rs 88,741 crore in 2025-26 to Rs 1,08,335 crore in 2026-27. Since 2014, over Rs 7.3 lakh crore has been invested in the region, with recent annual spending exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore. Assam alone will receive Rs 49,725 crore in tax devolution for 2026-27—more than five times its 2013-14 share.

Railway projects in the Northeast received a record Rs 11,486 crore, nearly five times the annual allocation under the previous government. The Ministry for Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) also saw its budget rise to Rs 6,812 crore, over three times the 2014 figure. Additionally, Rs 500 crore was set aside for rehabilitating former ULFA cadres and their families. A Rs 2 lakh crore special assistance package will speed up infrastructure, urban renewal, and logistics projects in Assam. Another Rs 5,000 crore was allocated for upgrading Tier-II and Tier-III cities in the region, covering public transport, sanitation, digital governance, and affordable housing. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the Budget as a major step in positioning the Northeast, especially Assam, as a key driver of national growth. The focus remains on infrastructure-led development, high-tech expansion, and balanced regional prosperity.

The Budget's record allocations aim to transform the Northeast's economic landscape. With increased funding for railways, urban development, and rehabilitation, the region is set for accelerated growth. The measures also align with broader goals of boosting manufacturing and high-tech industries across India.
