Unemployment Rate Rises Slightly in Baden-Württemberg

In a statement made on August 29, 2025, Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, the Minister of Economic Affairs, Work, and Tourism in Baden-Württemberg, confirmed that the unemployment rate in the region has risen to 4.7 percent. This is an increase of 0.3 percentage points from the previous month.

According to the Labor Market report for August 2025, which can be found on the Federal Employment Agency's Regional Directorate Baden-Württemberg's website, the total number of unemployed people in the region stands at 305,352. This represents an increase of 12,089 from the previous month.

The Minister emphasized the need for profound reforms in social security systems to prevent wage-related costs from rising unchecked. She also highlighted the importance of quickly opening up paths to training or qualified employment for young people. The number of unemployed young people under 25 years old was 30,839 in August 2025, an increase of 5,364 from the previous month.

Despite the rise in unemployment, the number of job vacancies reported to the Federal Employment Agency in August 2025 increased slightly to 76,009. This suggests that while there are more people looking for work, there are also more job opportunities available.

The Minister noted that the greatest challenge on the labor market is not a lack of applicants, but the restraint of companies. She stated that the labor market in Baden-Württemberg is facing a profound transformation, particularly in the industry.

To address these challenges, the Federal Minister Bärbel Bas established the Social State Commission (Sozialstaatskommission) in September 2025 with representatives from the federal, state, and local governments. The aim of this commission is to develop proposals for a modernized and less bureaucratic social security system while maintaining the current level of social protection.
