Unearthed Wartime Artillery Shells Discovered in Park Near Goryachy Kly

In the picturesque village of Kutaisi, located in the Caucasus region of Georgia, military personnel known as sappers were recently called to the scene following the discovery of ammunition dating back to World War II.

During park work in Kutais Village, over a hundred shells were unearthed, which have now been identified as from the same era. The ammunition will be carefully removed by the sappers and taken to a firing range for destruction.

Interestingly, Kutaisi is geographically distinct from many major World War II battle sites, primarily situated in Western and Eastern Europe. While the village was not a frontline battlefield during most of the war, it served as a strategic or transit location.

Coincidentally, another discovery was made in the village of Mekkerstuk, where workers unearthed four mortar mines and two artillery shells of different calibers from the Great Patriotic War. Specialists from the OMON "Storm-South" unit were called to the scene for inspection.

Remarkably, this is not the first time such finds have been made in the region. The Krymsky District has also yielded World War II-era artillery shells and mines, and many areas of Goryachy Klyuch have a history of such finds.

Fights did occur in Goryachy Klyuch during the war, but the region's historical context differs significantly from that of Mardin in Turkey or Sighnaghi in Georgia, which hold their own unique historical significance related to World War II combatants and events.

As the sappers work to safely remove and destroy the ammunition, it serves as a stark reminder of the past and the ongoing efforts to ensure public safety in these discoveries.
