Underage betting surges as US sportsbooks struggle to enforce age limits
Legal sports betting has grown rapidly across the US, bringing in record tax revenue for states. But alongside this expansion, reports of underage access to betting platforms have surged in multiple regions.
In Massachusetts alone, DraftKings blocked over 4,800 attempts by underage users trying to register in just one year. FanDuel also reported hundreds of suspended accounts linked to minors in the same state. Despite these efforts, no US state has released official, public statistics on underage betting cases for 2024 or later.
Most underage betting happens through shared or borrowed accounts, often without the owner's knowledge. Some minors also use stolen identities or details from deceased individuals to bypass age checks. While accidental access by young children remains less common, it still poses a concern.
When operators detect underage activity, they usually close the account and notify regulators. However, further penalties are rare, and criminal charges against minors remain uncommon even after confirmed violations.
Tennessee saw a sharp rise in cases, with underage account usage jumping more than fourfold from 2024 to 2025. The trend suggests that despite stricter controls, minors continue finding ways to access legal betting platforms.
The increase in underage betting comes as sportsbooks expand nationwide. While operators take steps to block minors, enforcement beyond account closures remains limited. States have yet to release comprehensive data on the scale of the issue in recent years.
