Exploring the Scenic Trails and Landmarks of Ascona-Locarno, Swiss Switzerland

Nestled in the heart of Italian Switzerland, the picturesque region of Ascona-Locarno offers a myriad of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts and tourists alike. From breathtaking hiking trails to exhilarating paragliding tours, this region is a treasure trove of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

One of the most iconic sites of pilgrimage is the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary, perched on a wooded crag with expansive views of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding mountains. A two-mile race up 400 steps leads to this famous site, making the journey a memorable one.

For those seeking a more leisurely pace, the Giro delle Rovine del Castelliere trail is a four-mile trail that leads to the prehistoric ruins of Castelliere castle. Along the way, you'll encounter the Oratorio Sant'Anna, a 17th-century chapel with a terrace overlooking Lake Maggiore. The route also passes by the Orrido di Ponte Brolla gorge, featuring smooth granite rock formations, historic shrines, and tavern-style restaurants.

If you're looking for panoramic views, consider taking an optional chairlift from Cardada to Cimetta, a height of 5,482ft above sea level. From here, various hiking paths are available, including Nordic walking and orienteering trails, pleasantly hilly rambles, and breathtaking descents into the Maggia and Verzasca valleys.

For those who prefer cycling, a 15.5-mile cycle along the Maggia River offers a scenic journey through cobblestoned villages, green fields, shaded woodland paths, and wild garlic. The route can start in Ponte Brolla or Locarno and concludes in the peaceful village of Cavergno.

For the more adventurous, paragliding tours with Mountaingliders take off at 5,500ft and conclude at the Maggia delta, Switzerland's lowest point, where visitors can walk down to a sandy beach and into the cooling lake.

The region also caters to rock climbers. Brione Verzasca offers more than 700 bouldering routes for climbers of all levels, with the coarse stone providing excellent grip. Equipment for rock climbing can be rented from Rock-Ways climbing school in the Maggia Valley, and professional climber Egon Bernasconi offers lessons in Balladrum.

For those who prefer a more structured outdoor event, the RunThrough Trails Ascona-Locarno takes place in October 2025. This event offers 24km and 42km courses through Locarno's cobblestoned Piazza Grande, mountain forests, and up to the Pizzo Leone summit.

So, whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat, an adrenaline-pumping adventure, or a challenging hike, Ascona-Locarno in Swiss Switzerland has something for everyone. With its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and diverse activities, this region is a must-visit destination.
