Uncertainty hangs over the Putin-Zelenskyy meeting, with Trump issuing threats of repercussions
In the ongoing standoff between Russia and Ukraine, diplomatic efforts to negotiate a peaceful resolution have hit a roadblock. The United States, Turkey, Denmark, and Sweden are actively engaged in negotiations with Russia, but the Ukrainian government has often been excluded or has limited participation in these talks.
The latest development came when Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of employing deliberate delay tactics. This accusation was followed by Yuriy Ushakov, the Kremlin's foreign policy adviser, stating that recent media reports about trilateral talks do not accurately reflect what Putin and Trump discussed during their Alaska meeting. According to Ushakov, there is no agreement between Putin and Trump on a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The European Union (EU) has expressed skepticism about Putin's willingness to participate in meaningful negotiations. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas revealed that most member states support training Ukrainian soldiers within Ukraine following any ceasefire agreement. The EU is also advancing its 19th sanctions package against Russia, targeting energy and financial sectors, and exploring new tariffs on Russian exports. European leaders are preparing to escalate sanctions against Russia if Putin continues to reject high-level meetings.
In a bid to break the impasse, Turkey has emerged as a potential mediator in the conflict. Officials suggest Istanbul as a possible venue for high-level meetings between the warring parties. The UK is also pursuing defense shipbuilding deals with Turkey, Denmark, and Sweden.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has threatened unspecified repercussions over the stalled diplomacy between Russia and Ukraine. Trump gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a two-week deadline to agree to direct talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which has now expired. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy unlikely to occur.
Amidst these geopolitical tensions, the economy of Turkey has had the fourth-highest decadelong GDP growth globally. The US warship transited the Panama Canal amid tensions with Venezuela. Furthermore, a court in the US blocked deportations of certain individuals.
On a different note, Trabzonspor is considering Manchester United's Onana as a potential replacement for Ugurcan Cakir. The EU is urging the US to coordinate efforts to pressure Putin before Trump's deadline expires.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether diplomatic efforts will bear fruit or if tensions will escalate further.
