U.S. Prospects for a Vigorous Response from Zelenskyy Following Russian Assault

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy expresses anticipation for a robust response from the United States following the recent Russian attack.

In a series of escalating attacks, Russia launched heavy air strikes on Ukraine overnight, causing significant damage in several cities, including the capital Kyiv. According to reports, at least 810 drones and a dozen missiles were used in the attacks, damaging several high-rise buildings and setting the government headquarters on fire. Tragically, at least four people, including a child, were killed in the largest drone attack on Ukraine since the start of the war.

Following these intense attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the international community to react. He expressed hope for a strong US reaction after the largest Russian air attack on Ukraine since the beginning of the war. CDU foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter called for significantly stronger military support for Ukraine, including Taurus cruise missiles.

The Russian military has reportedly lost 970 personnel in the past 24 hours, either killed or wounded. In response to these losses, Russian President Vladimir Putin is allegedly interested in meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on neutral ground. However, the exact details of such a meeting have yet to be confirmed.

The coordination of the Russian troop exercises in Belarus at the end of September 2025 was led by the General Staff of the Belarusian Armed Forces as part of the joint strategic exercise "Zapad 2025" involving Russian and Belarusian forces. This exercise has raised concerns among Ukraine's neighbours, with Poland and its allies deploying military aircraft near the border due to Russian air strikes on western Ukraine.

In an effort to influence Putin, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that additional economic pressure from the USA and Europe could persuade the Russian President to engage in peace talks with Ukraine. Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy emphasised the need for further development of air defense following another incursion of Russian drones on various targets in Ukraine.

Amidst the chaos, there have been signs of resilience. Zelenskyy announced that almost 60 percent of the weapons used by the Ukrainian military now come from domestic production. Despite the damage to the government building in Kyiv, no major disruptions to the government's operations have been reported.

However, the attacks have taken a heavy toll on civilians. A fire broke out in the main government building in Kyiv following a Russian attack, resulting in at least one fatality and eleven injured. Falling debris from downed aerial vehicles started a fire on a 16-story apartment building in Kyiv, resulting in the death of a one-year-old infant.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community will be closely monitoring developments and exploring ways to de-escalate the conflict and bring about a peaceful resolution. The US military expert John Spencer assesses the Russian summer offensive as failed, offering a glimmer of hope for a more peaceful future.
