Ukrainian earth now holds Latvian soldier's remains.
In a solemn ceremony held at the Kharkiv crematorium, friends, family, and comrades-in-arms bid a heartfelt farewell to Latvian volunteer soldier Sļadzevskis. The 27-year-old, who would have celebrated his 28th birthday at the beginning of July, lost his life on May 13 during a combat mission near the village of Novovodyan in the Svatovo district of the Luhansk region.
Sļadzevskis moved to Ukraine in 2017 and quickly became an active member of the Kharkiv Patriotic Activities Movement. Alongside his friends, he founded the social activity initiative, "Nord Storm," a club that would later expand to operate in 18 cities.
The self-defense club "Nord Storm" was one of several initiatives founded by Sļadzevskis, reflecting his commitment to defending Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.
Representatives from the Latvian embassy attended the farewell ceremony, bringing a Latvian flag to drape over Sļadzevskis' coffin. Approximately 50 of his comrades-in-arms were present, including members of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with whom he had first connected in 2017.
The deputy commander of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, Ihor Mikhailenko, addressed the gathered crowd, describing Sļadzevskis as someone who approached every task with one hundred percent dedication. The brigade's commander paid tribute to Sļadzevskis as a unique person, loved by everyone without exception.
The farewell ceremony included both Latvian and Ukrainian flags, symbolising the international solidarity and shared commitment to peace in Ukraine. Sļadzevskis is the third Latvian volunteer soldier to be killed during the full-scale Russian invasion.
Our thoughts and condolences are with Sļadzevskis' family and friends during this difficult time. He will be remembered for his dedication, courage, and commitment to defending Ukraine.
