Ukraine's President, Zelensky, issues a warning about an imminent Russian military offensive.

In a concerning development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a warning about a potential major offensive by Russian troops in the Donbass region, a region in eastern Ukraine that has been a site of ongoing conflict since 2014.

The city of Pokrovsk, located in the south of the Donetsk region and known for its mining industry, has been under siege for months, with constant shelling reducing its population to a few residents. Before the war, Pokrovsk had approximately 60,000 inhabitants.

Zelensky stated that the concentration of Russian troops in the Pokrovsk area is up to 100,000. These troops are part of Russia's Central Grouping of Forces, considered their strongest formation. The offensive, as of July 2025, involves approximately 110,000 to 112,000 troops.

The news about this warning and troop concentration was reported by the news agency Interfax Ukraine. Despite the siege, Russian troops have not yet been able to capture the strategically important transport hub of Pokrovsk.

Zelensky indicated that Ukraine is prepared for the potential advance of Russian troops. He made this statement in a conversation with media representatives. The current situation in Pokrovsk, as assessed by President Zelensky, is under control.

The area around Pokrovsk is considered to be the most threatened in the Donbass. The potential offensive could escalate the ongoing conflict in the region. Russian forces have been preparing for an advance, with ongoing fighting and sabotage operations into Pokrovsk as of mid-2024, and infiltration efforts beginning around late July 2024, continuing into mop-up operations in August 2024. However, no precise future attack date has been detailed in the searched information.

The Donbass region, where Pokrovsk is situated, has been a battleground between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists for over eight years. The city, being a mining town, holds strategic importance due to its transport hub.

Zelensky has urged vigilance and readiness among the Ukrainian people, emphasising the need to stand united in the face of potential aggression. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
