Ukraine disputes Russian claims of advancements

In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, several significant events have unfolded over the past few days.

Ukrainian forces have managed to halt Russian advances in the Donetsk region and prevent troops from capturing targets, effectively halting further progress into the Dnipropetrovsk region. This success has been reported by various sources, including the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which disputes Russia's claims of territorial gains, stating that they are exaggerated.

Meanwhile, in the northeast of the country, Ukrainian forces have reported a success on the front line, liberating the village of Myrne near Kupyansk. This victory was reported by the Ukrainian open-source project Deepstatemap.

Unfortunately, Russian troops continue to target Ukrainian civilians, according to the Ukrainian Azov Corps. One such incident involved the alleged execution of an unarmed civilian by a Russian soldier in the Pokrovsk district of the Donetsk region. The incident, which is a direct violation of the Geneva Convention on the protection of civilians, was captured on camera and published by the Azov Corps.

The Ukrainian military has also reported a series of successful interceptions of Russian drones and missiles. Overnight, they intercepted 126 out of 142 Russian drones, resulting in impacts or crashes at 16 locations. The Russian air force, however, claims to have intercepted 21 drones from Ukraine.

Elsewhere, the European Union is exploring the possibility of using frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine's defense and reconstruction after the war. This move comes as the region of Cherson receives three powerful generators worth around one million dollars from supporters in the US.

On the diplomatic front, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of his scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in China. The visit is for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which will last until Monday.

In a separate development, the Lithuanian military is installing obstacles to strengthen security on unused roads at border control points with Russia and Belarus, as part of the Baltic Defense Line.

However, there has been no information regarding the Russian General Staff announcing objectives for Russian troops in autumn.

Despite the ongoing conflict, one civilian was killed and at least 25 others were injured in the city of Saporischschja during the latest overnight attack. The Ukrainian authorities report a Russian drone attack on the Odessa region, causing more than 29,000 people to lose electricity.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently in China for a multi-day visit, landing in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin. The visit is not expected to lead to any immediate resolution in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
