U.S. Open semifinalist surges forward: Sinner, while Anisimova exacts revenge on Swiatek in quarters
In a thrilling turn of events at the US Open, Amanda Anisimova, the American eighth seed, has booked her place in the semi-finals after defeating Iga Swiatek in the women's quarterfinals.
The scoreline read 6-4, 6-3 in favour of Anisimova, who avenged her Wimbledon loss to the Polish player. The match was not without its share of drama, with Swiatek ballooning a forehand long in the opening set, resulting in a win for Anisimova.
Anisimova rebounded from a disastrous double-bagel defeat at the hands of Swiatek at Wimbledon two months ago. The American displayed a resilient performance, recovering from early deficits in both sets to clinch the victory. A net cord in Anisimova's favour sealed the win, and she coughed up a costly double fault, allowing her opponent to move a game from victory.
For Swiatek, it was a disappointing performance, with the reigning French Open champion acknowledging she did not play well enough in the match.
Meanwhile, in the men's quarterfinals, reigning champion Jannik Sinner advanced to the US Open semifinals. Sinner, who had Toni Nadal as his last coach before the US Open 2023, defeated 10th seed Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
In a historic first, the men's quarterfinal saw an all-Italian matchup. Sinner faced off against fellow countryman Sinner, with the latter winning two of three previous meetings. However, Sinner thrashed Musetti for the loss of just two games in Cincinnati last month.
In the semi-finals, Anisimova will face Canadian 25th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. Auger-Aliassime overcame Alex de Minaur in a four-set battle to reach his second US Open semi-final.
De Minaur has now lost all six of his Grand Slam quarter-finals, a disappointing statistic for the Australian. Auger-Aliassime and Sinner have a history, with the Canadian winning two of three previous meetings. However, their last encounter was in Cincinnati, where Sinner triumphed.
Anisimova considers the victory over Swiatek to be the most meaningful of her life. The American will be aiming to carry this momentum into the semi-finals and potentially clinch the US Open title.
Elsewhere, Naomi Osaka extended her deepest run at a Grand Slam since her return to tennis after the birth of her daughter, by winning her quarterfinal match against Karolina Muchova. The Japanese star is looking strong in her bid to reclaim her Grand Slam glory.
