American tennis prodigy Ben Shelton continued his impressive run at the US Open, securing a place in the second round with a dominant victory on the Arthur Ashe Stadium showcourt.

Shelton, just 22 years old, won his opening match against an unspecified opponent 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, in a match that lasted 2 hours and 7 minutes. The youngster, who was less than a year old when Andy Roddick won the last Grand Slam title for American men at the US Open in 2003, is among a group of American men aiming to end this 22-year drought.

Shelton's next opponent in the second round will be either Pablo Carreno Busta or Pablo Llamas Ruiz. Despite his young age, Shelton has already made a name for himself in the tennis world. He reached the quarterfinals in Cincinnati and the fourth round in the National Bank Open 2025, but as of August 2025, he has not yet won his first ATP Masters 1000 title.

However, Shelton recently celebrated his first ATP Masters triumph at the Canadian Open earlier this month. This victory has undoubtedly boosted his confidence ahead of the US Open, with the Arthur Ashe Stadium being his favourite court.

After his impressive win, Shelton remained focused on the task at hand, saying, "One step at a time," and "Trying to get better every day." He emphasised that he does not want to focus too much on future matches after his opening win.

The US Open tournament remains Shelton's favourite, and he will be hoping to continue his winning streak and potentially bring home the Grand Slam title that has eluded American men for so long.
