U.S. Open final postponement due to Donald Trump's security protocol, causing distress for Sinner and Alcaraz players.
President Donald Trump made a return to the US Open in Queens, New York, for the first time since 2015, causing a delay in the start of the highly-anticipated men's singles final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Trump arrived at Arthur Ashe Stadium around 1:30pm ET, prompting airport-style security at all entrance points to the US Open grounds. VIPs, including the President, had their bags thoroughly searched, and extra security measures were put in place.
The New York Police Department increased its numbers for the event, with a ring of steel erected around Arthur Ashe Stadium to protect the President. The additional security measures resulted in a postponement of about 30 minutes to allow fans more time to enter the stadium safely.
The US Open men's singles final, which was originally scheduled to start at 2pm ET on Sunday, was pushed back to 2:45pm ET. The delay caused queues outside the arena to become "insane", with onlookers reporting that punters were waiting in the rain to get in after paying thousands of dollars.
Trump, who was born in the borough of Queens, New York, was a target of an assassination attempt last year before he was elected to the Oval Office. He watched the final from the Rolex suite, where he was met with a mix of loud cheers and boos from the crowd.
