U.S. imports of Turkish eggs skyrocket by more than fourfold in eight months' time

U.S. imports of Turkish eggs saw a significant surge in the initial eight months of the year, recording a staggering increase of more than 400% year-on-year, largely due to the bird flu epidemic.

In a significant development, Turkey has seen an increase in the number of countries to which it exports eggs and chicken meat. This expansion now includes European Union (EU) countries, marking a significant milestone in the country's agricultural exports.

According to Bedri Girit, the head of the Aegean Fishery and Animal Products Exporters' Association, Turkey's exports to the United States increased fourfold and to the European Union nearly threefold during the bird flu period. This growth is particularly noteworthy, as it demonstrates the resilience of Turkey's agricultural sector in the face of global challenges.

Girit expressed his satisfaction with these figures, stating that they have achieved significant export figures on a country-by-country basis. He recounted how Turkey initially started exporting eggs and chicken meat to Italy, but later expanded to include Greece, Spain, and other countries.

The Aegean Fishery and Animal Products Exporters' Association is a key player in Turkey's agricultural sector, producing approximately 2.6 million tons of chicken meat and 23 billion eggs annually.

Girit also suggested that bird flu cases in some countries may be due to weather conditions and are spread by migratory birds and other factors. He emphasised that the bird flu crisis has benefited Turkey, as it has showcased the quality of their eggs to new countries and buyers.

However, the search results do not provide information about the countries Turkey identified as important export markets for eggs besides the USA and Italy in the first eight months of 2025.

Despite this, it is clear that Turkey's agricultural sector has proven to be a robust player in the global market, even during times of crisis. The bird flu crisis has presented both challenges and opportunities, and Turkey appears to be seizing these opportunities to expand its reach in the global market.

Notably, severe bird flu cases have been reported in the United States and Brazil, according to Girit, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and precautions in the face of this global challenge.
