Two residences on Richmond Street succumb to collapse during basement remodeling works.
In the heart of Richmond, just before 3pm on September 11, 2024, a shocking incident occurred on Lower Mortlake Road. The collapse of two terraced homes, part of a redevelopment project to create 14 co-living spaces, left residents shaken and concerned about the safety of other ongoing house renovations.
Emergency services, including firefighters and police, responded quickly to the scene, with the London Fire Brigade on the scene as well. The incident resulted in the roofs caving in and significant damage to the upper and ground floors. Fortunately, shocked Richmond residents are relieved that nobody was killed in the collapse.
The collapse appears to be linked to the ongoing basement refurbishment. Planning permission was granted for the basements to be converted into amenity spaces. However, the local building authority or building department of Richmond city is responsible for the supervision of construction work in the residential renovation project, and no gas leaks were confirmed during the incident.
Emergency services are now investigating possible gas leaks in relation to the collapse. An anonymous 52-year-old neighbour expressed concern about the lack of community involvement in the redevelopment project, while elderly neighbour Judith Maddison voiced her outrage over the potential danger posed by the collapse.
Ramon, a nearby resident, described the moment of the collapse, "I was just walking my dog, and I heard a loud crash. I turned around, and the buildings were collapsing right before my eyes." Many residents are left concerned about the safety of similar renovation projects in the area.
The sudden collapse has halted all progress on the project. The incident has also raised questions about building oversight and the risks associated with extensive refurbishments in residential neighbourhoods. As investigations continue, the community hopes for answers and assurances about the safety of their homes and neighbourhood.
