Two fatalities reported in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, due to heavy rainfall; seven districts in the region close schools amidst the inclement weather conditions
In the past 24 hours, Chennai, India, has been hit by heavy rainfall, resulting in a series of incidents that have affected the city and its residents.
According to reports, two individuals lost their lives due to a wall collapse and electrocution, tragically occurring in separate incidents. The heavy rainfall on Tuesday night also flooded several localities in Chennai and its outskirts, causing disruption in transportation and daily life.
The Tamil Nadu state capital received approximately 126.1 mm rainfall from 8.30 am on Tuesday till 5.30 am on Wednesday. This heavy downpour led to traffic congestion and slow-moving cars, making commuting a challenge for many.
In response to the situation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin held an online meeting with top authorities on the morning of November 2. He urged them to expedite handling complaints about the rainfall and advised taking swift action to address the issues arising from the heavy rainfall and flooding.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted more heavy rainfall in isolated areas over Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram districts in the coming days. To ensure the safety of students and staff, the Tamil Nadu government declared a rainfall vacation for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet districts on Wednesday morning.
The Tamil Nadu government is working closely with local authorities to address the issues caused by the heavy rainfall and flooding. Two metros in Chennai were closed due to the heavy rainfall, and efforts are being made to restore normalcy as soon as possible.
The IMD's forecasts are a cause for concern, but the authorities are doing their best to prepare for and manage the situation. The people of Chennai are resilient and have weathered similar challenges in the past. With the cooperation of the authorities and the public, it is hoped that the city will overcome this difficult period and return to normalcy soon.
