Turkey's deliberate escalation of pressure on the SDF is intensifying - as expected
In recent weeks, the Turkish government has publicly expressed concerns about the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), indirectly criticizing them due to their alleged support for the Kurdish PKK. This strategy aims to offer Kurdish political movements a role in mainstream policy-making while also dealing with the SDF.
The Turkish government may pursue a balanced approach, considering both limited, decisive attacks on the SDF and advancing a gradual peace process with Kurdish political movements within Turkey. However, the peace process with the PKK may be perceived as a weakness by the SDF, potentially influencing regional dynamics, particularly with Israel, which Turkey views as a hostile or "rogue state" actor in the region.
The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader, Bahceli, has warned the SDF, and his comments were of high importance. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has also faced criticism for his comments against the SDF. Hurriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi has highlighted frustration and anger in Ankara against the SDF.
Meanwhile, the SDF may find this political strategy of Turkey deeply flawed, and the SDF leadership assumes that an attack against them may easily derail the peace process in Turkey. The Turkish government's strategy requires a widening rift between the SDF and Kurdish groups within Turkey.
On a separate note, Turkey is set to face Italy in the world championship final. In domestic news, Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen was injured during Nigeria's World Cup qualifier. Seismologist has dismissed earthquake rumors in Turkey.
In other news, Fenerbahce is nearing a deal with Zinedine Zidane to succeed Mourinho. The Turkish government's stance on the Israel-related armed group near the Turkish border could potentially change the priorities and postponement of the peace process in Turkey.
Lastly, Turkey is set to witness a 'blood moon' eclipse, adding a unique spectacle to the country's skyline. A Pakistani-born politician has become the UK's first Muslim woman home secretary, marking a significant milestone in British politics.
