Turkey's latest national ship, the multirole frigate TCG Içel (F-518), was launched on Monday at the Sefine Shipyard in Yalova. The vessel, which measures 113 meters in length and has a displacement of around 3,200 tons, is one of seven Istif-class frigates to be produced.

The contract for the construction of TCG Içel was signed on April 6, 2023, by Turkey's Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB). The frigate is powered by a combination of gas turbine and diesel engines, enabling a maximum speed of over 29 knots.

TCG Içel is equipped with domestically developed weapon systems, such as the 76-millimeter gun from Turkish firm MKE. It can perform various missions, including surveillance, reconnaissance, patrol, anti-submarine warfare, air defense, self-defense, and search and rescue. The frigate is also capable of operating in all weather conditions up to sea state five, or waves up to four meters.

The vessel's range at 14 knots is 5,700 nautical miles, and at 19 knots, it is 4,000 nautical miles with 95 percent fuel consumption. TCG Içel has a water capacity to remain at sea for at least two weeks.

In terms of its defensive capabilities, TCG Içel uses the Gokdeniz close-in air defense system, Midlas vertical launch system, and Atmaca anti-ship missiles. The helicopter deck of TCG Içel can accommodate 10-ton helicopters or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

TCG Içel will provide amphibious support and be used for protecting maritime transport in coastal waters. It will also track and prevent terrorist attacks. The construction of TCG Içel involved efforts from 200 supplier companies, achieving a domestic content rate of over 70 percent.

Two of the seven Istif-class frigates are currently under construction at Sefine Shipyard. The TCG Içel project was signed on April 6, 2023, and it marks a significant step forward in Turkey's naval capabilities.
