Turkey and Azerbaijan strengthen energy cooperation, expanding initiatives from natural gas to renewable energy such as green electricity.

Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar addressed the fourth Turkey-Azerbaijan Energy Forum in Izmir, emphasizing the importance of diversifying and deepening cooperation between the two countries. This year, the partnership took a significant step forward with the Shafag-Asiman agreement.

The Shafag-Asiman agreement marks a new chapter in the ongoing energy collaboration between Turkey and Azerbaijan. Future cooperation will focus on the Karabakh, D-230, and Dostlug fields, as Turkey aims to quadruple its natural gas production by 2028. This will not only boost Turkey's domestic energy supply but also position it as a reliable contributor to the region.

Azerbaijan, on the other hand, is leveraging its wind and solar potential to become a clean electricity exporter. The Green Electricity Transmission and Trade Project, linking Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Bulgaria, will bring significant benefits not only to the participating countries but also to the entire region and Europe. This project will connect Eurasia and Europe through Turkey, facilitating the trade and transmission of electricity from renewable sources.

The partnership in the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli and Shah Deniz fields has been ongoing, providing energy security for the region. The new electricity line connecting Turkey and Nakhchivan, currently under development, is another step towards strengthening energy ties. The Igdir-Nakhchivan Natural Gas Pipeline, now operational, secures Nakhchivan's supply and deepens cross-border energy cooperation.

Turkey and Azerbaijan continue to emphasize cooperation in renewable energy and electricity transmission as shared responsibilities towards future generations. Bayraktar stated that energy is one of the main driving forces of the development and prosperity of both countries. The recent natural gas cooperation agreement signed on May 14, 2024, further strengthens energy security and regional ties.

The Turkey-Syria Natural Gas Pipeline, launched on Aug. 2, 2025, is both a strategic energy route and a contributor to peace and stability in the region. Turkey will begin supplying natural gas to Syria, further solidifying the energy partnership between the two countries.

The understanding of 'one nation, two states' finds its most concrete expression in the major projects carried out particularly in the energy sector, according to Bayraktar. The Green Electricity Transmission and Trade Project and the Turkey-Syria Natural Gas Pipeline are testament to this shared vision. The forum was held alongside the Turkey Wind Energy Congress, underscoring the commitment of both countries to a sustainable and prosperous energy future.
